Serving Your Community: How to Become a Parish Councillor

Parish councils are the most local tier of government, working directly with residents to support community wellbeing and shape the future of the area. Councillors help guide decisions on local services, facilities, planning matters, and community initiatives.

If you care about your parish and want to make a difference, joining the council is a meaningful way to get involved.

Standing for Election

Parish council elections are held every four years, with the next scheduled for May 2027. If you’re considering standing for election, here’s what to expect:

  • Eligibility: You must be at least 18 years old, a UK or Commonwealth citizen, and either live, work, or own property in the parish (or within three miles of its boundary). Full eligibility details are available on the Electoral Commission website.
  • Nomination Process: You’ll need to submit a nomination form, available from your local Electoral Services team. This must be signed by two registered electors from the parish.
  • Raising Awareness: Once nominated, you’re free to share your ideas with residents – whether through conversations, leaflets, or social media – to explain why you’re standing and what you hope to achieve.
  • Election Outcome: If more candidates stand than there are seats, a vote will be held. If fewer candidates come forward, those nominated may be elected automatically.

Joining Through Co-option

Outside of the regular election cycle, vacancies may be filled by co-option – a process where the council directly appoints a new member.

  • Expressing Interest: When a vacancy is advertised, eligible residents can email the council with a short statement explaining why they’d like to join, what skills they bring, and how they hope to contribute.
  • Meeting the Council: You may be invited to attend a council meeting to introduce yourself and answer informal questions from councillors.
  • Appointment: Councillors will vote to select a new member from the applicants. Once appointed and having signed the declaration of acceptance, you’ll be able to take part in council business straight away.
